In a recent video with the Youtuber Rafael Zeier, Federighi explained how iPad handles background tasks. The philosophy appears to be different from macOS, focusing on user awareness and control:

- It’s always visible;

- If an app wants to run a background tasks, “it has to tell the system” including “what it’s called”, “how long it’s going to take”, and its “progress” status;

- The user can: “always see it come up”, “know it’s happening”. It will move into a “little live activity up in your status bar”;

Regarding limitations, Federighi states there are “no limits” in terms of how many background tasks can run simultaneously or how many apps can run them. However, the key takeaway is that you’re always going to be aware of and in control instead of it just sort of happening endlessly potentially draining your battery when you didn't realize it [like macOS and other desktop systems]
