A Russian hacker was detained in Thailand. He is likely a GRU officer

On Phuket, Thai police detained a Russian citizen at the request of the United States. He is suspected of major cybercrimes.

Authorities described him as a β€œworld-class hacker” involved in attacks on government infrastructure in Europe and the US.

The man was arrested at a hotel in the Thalang area. Police seized his laptops, phones, and crypto wallets.

He is now in custody, and the Thai Attorney General’s Office has already launched the extradition procedure.

According to an investigation by the outlet Vot Tak, the detainee may be 35-year-old Russian military intelligence officer Alexey Lukashev, a senior lieutenant of GRU unit No. 26165.

His name appears in the FBI database among 40 Russians wanted for cyberattacks.

According to US intelligence, Lukashev took part in hacking the servers of the US Democratic Party during the 2016 election and coordinated part of the cyberattack campaigns against Western agencies.
