#TechBite: Japan will be the first in the world to launch 4G/5G from airships at an altitude of 20 km. The project is being implemented by SoftBank together with the American startup Sceye. HAPS platforms will provide connection of ordinary smartphones, latency of less than 20 ms and twice as fast as Starlink, while maintenance costs will be lower than those of satellites
Airships will be able to cover hard-to-reach areas and operate for days without landing. The new system will replace part of the ground infrastructure and will be used as a backup communication during earthquakes and accidents. Commercial launch is expected after a series of tests.
