Tanzania has restricted access to the social media platform X just hours after hackers took over the country’s police force account, according to NetBlocks.
The internet watchdog reported Tuesday evening that X was inaccessible across major Tanzanian ISPs, including Halotel, Airtel, Liquid Telecom, Habari Node, and Vodacom.
“Live metrics show X (formerly Twitter) has become unreachable on major internet providers in Tanzania,” NetBlocks posted on Mastodon shortly after 9 p.m. EAT. The blackout followed a false claim shared by the hacked police account, alleging President Samia Suluhu Hassan had died—an incident that reportedly infuriated national authorities.
