Hi everyone! Is anyone still using or missing the Alex voice from macOS?
Good news! Alex can now be used with NVDA on Windows through the Panthera Speech add-on.
Panthera Speech is an NVDA add-on that acts as a loader for several speech engines from older versions of Mac OS X.
At the moment, it supports:
- Tiger Speech
- Leopard Speech
-Snow Leopard Speech
- Lion Speech
The Alex voice is available with Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion Speech.
Even more interestingly, the Alex voice data from macOS Sequoia can also be used with the Lion Speech engine.
To install Panthera Speech, visit the official repository:
https://github.com/tgeczy/panthera-speech
Open the Releases page and download the latest version.
Once downloaded, install the add-on as you normally would, then restart NVDA if prompted.
Please note that the speech engine and voice data are not included with the add-on. You will need to download them separately from:
https://seedy.cc/speech
If you want to use Alex, I recommend using Lion Speech.
Download lion.zip from the link above, then extract it using 7-Zip or another archive extractor.
After extracting it, open the resulting lion folder.
Press Control+A to select everything inside the folder, then press Control+C to copy it.
Next, open the NVDA Menu, go to Tools, and select Mac OS X speech data.
Choose:
Lion speech -- Mac OS X 10.7
Press Tab until you reach Open the speech data folder, then press Enter.
Once the Lion speech data folder opens, press Control+V to paste everything you copied from the extracted lion folder.
Important: copy all the files and folders inside the lion folder, not the lion folder itself.
When the copy process is finished, restart NVDA.
Then press Control+NVDA+S to open the synthesizer selection dialog.
Use the arrow keys to find Lion Speech, then press Enter.
If everything was installed correctly, Lion Speech should now work, and the original Alex voice included with Lion should be able to speak.
If you would like to try the newer Alex voice data from macOS Sequoia, first make sure that Lion Speech is already installed and that the original Lion version of Alex is working properly.
Download sequoia-alex from the same website and extract it.
Inside the extracted files, you should find a folder named:
sequoia-speech
Rename this folder to:
Alex.SpeechVoice
Then copy the Alex.SpeechVoice folder.
Before replacing the original Lion version of Alex, switch NVDA to a different synthesizer first. For example, you can use Windows OneCore Voices.
Press Control+NVDA+S, choose another synthesizer, and press Enter.
Once Lion Speech is no longer the active synthesizer, open the Lion speech data folder again through Mac OS X speech data, following the same steps described earlier.
Inside the Lion data folder, open:
Speech
then:
Voices
Inside the Voices folder, you should find the original Lion folder named:
Alex.SpeechVoice
I strongly recommend making a backup before replacing it.
Rename the original Lion folder to:
Alex.SpeechVoice-Lion-Backup
After creating the backup, paste the Alex.SpeechVoice folder from macOS Sequoia into the Voices folder.
The Sequoia version of Alex.SpeechVoice will now take the place of the original Lion version.
When finished, restart NVDA.
Then press Control+NVDA+S again.
Use the arrow keys to find:
Lion Speech (Alex, MacinTalk 4.0)
Then press Enter.
If everything has been set up correctly, Lion Speech should now use the Alex voice data from macOS Sequoia.
In simple terms, the Lion Speech engine is still responsible for converting text into speech.
The Sequoia version of Alex only replaces the voice data used by the Lion engine.
So what you are actually using is the Lion MacinTalk engine together with the newer Alex voice data from macOS Sequoia.

Good news! Alex can now be used with NVDA on Windows through the Panthera Speech add-on.
Panthera Speech is an NVDA add-on that acts as a loader for several speech engines from older versions of Mac OS X.
At the moment, it supports:
- Tiger Speech
- Leopard Speech
-Snow Leopard Speech
- Lion Speech
The Alex voice is available with Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion Speech.
Even more interestingly, the Alex voice data from macOS Sequoia can also be used with the Lion Speech engine.
To install Panthera Speech, visit the official repository:
https://github.com/tgeczy/panthera-speech
Open the Releases page and download the latest version.
Once downloaded, install the add-on as you normally would, then restart NVDA if prompted.
Please note that the speech engine and voice data are not included with the add-on. You will need to download them separately from:
https://seedy.cc/speech
If you want to use Alex, I recommend using Lion Speech.
Download lion.zip from the link above, then extract it using 7-Zip or another archive extractor.
After extracting it, open the resulting lion folder.
Press Control+A to select everything inside the folder, then press Control+C to copy it.
Next, open the NVDA Menu, go to Tools, and select Mac OS X speech data.
Choose:
Lion speech -- Mac OS X 10.7
Press Tab until you reach Open the speech data folder, then press Enter.
Once the Lion speech data folder opens, press Control+V to paste everything you copied from the extracted lion folder.
Important: copy all the files and folders inside the lion folder, not the lion folder itself.
When the copy process is finished, restart NVDA.
Then press Control+NVDA+S to open the synthesizer selection dialog.
Use the arrow keys to find Lion Speech, then press Enter.
If everything was installed correctly, Lion Speech should now work, and the original Alex voice included with Lion should be able to speak.
If you would like to try the newer Alex voice data from macOS Sequoia, first make sure that Lion Speech is already installed and that the original Lion version of Alex is working properly.
Download sequoia-alex from the same website and extract it.
Inside the extracted files, you should find a folder named:
sequoia-speech
Rename this folder to:
Alex.SpeechVoice
Then copy the Alex.SpeechVoice folder.
Before replacing the original Lion version of Alex, switch NVDA to a different synthesizer first. For example, you can use Windows OneCore Voices.
Press Control+NVDA+S, choose another synthesizer, and press Enter.
Once Lion Speech is no longer the active synthesizer, open the Lion speech data folder again through Mac OS X speech data, following the same steps described earlier.
Inside the Lion data folder, open:
Speech
then:
Voices
Inside the Voices folder, you should find the original Lion folder named:
Alex.SpeechVoice
I strongly recommend making a backup before replacing it.
Rename the original Lion folder to:
Alex.SpeechVoice-Lion-Backup
