For the first time, I have seen an American president and defence secretary openly advocate for diplomacy, warning against war and especially World War III. This level of transparency is rare, and it stands in stark contrast to the long history of U.S. military interventions.

Decades of American warfare—from Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan—have followed the same pattern: massive expenditures, countless deaths, and, in the end, a withdrawal that leaves behind instability. These wars do not serve the interests of ordinary Americans. Instead, they enrich arms manufacturers and defense contractors while the cost is borne by the poor, who fill the ranks of the military.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict cannot be won by conventional means. Ukraine is running out of soldiers, and Russia is a nuclear power. The idea of an endless, financially unsustainable war—funded by billions in printed money—echoes past conflicts where the U.S. eventually had to walk away.

Yet, when it comes to Israel and Palestine, we see a glaring double standard. The same politicians who now speak about diplomacy have, for years, funded what can only be described as genocide in Palestine. Both Democrats and Republicans have blindly supported endless war and occupation, proving that neither party deserves to be taken seriously on issues of peace.

The real question is: Who benefits from war? It’s certainly not the people fighting and dying in it. Those who speak of “honor” and “cowardice” are rarely the ones sacrificing their sons—they are the ones protecting their stock portfolios, hiring PR firms to sell war as a noble cause.

If we are serious about breaking this cycle, we must reject the propaganda that war is the only option. If diplomacy is the right approach for Ukraine, why not for Palestine? If war is too costly now, why wasn’t it before? The military-industrial complex will not voluntarily step back—we have to stop buying into its justifications.
