First off, the actual compass in this thing is simply dreadful. It’s a grossly inaccurate, cheap plastic compass with no lubrication and barely any lume. That’s not why you are buying this though. You are getting it to remove the cheap, useless compass in the casing and to replace it with a super high quality Francis Barker NATO survival button compass.

The back of the brass compass casing is removable with a standard adjustable watch case opener. The plastic compass inside pops right out, and is held in place with a rubber o-ring. Discard the compass and o-ring. Once you have everything apart, remove the lacquer covering the brass casing using acetone (it prevents the brass from developing a patina, and makes it difficult to polish unless its removed). Then sand down the parts with 450 grit sandpaper to remove the machining marks, and then with 2000 grit sandpaper. Finally buff to a shine with metal polish on a buffing wheel. The whole sanding/buffing process removes the writing on the back of the case.

The original compass dimensions are 16.9x6mm. The NATO survival compass dimensions are 15x5mm. Install a sapphire watch glass into the casing (if it has an antireflection coating, even better). This is to prevent the smaller NATO compass from falling out. The dimensions of the glass I used were 17.2x0.8mm. Next, install a new nitrile rubber o-ring on to the NATO compass around the central groove and press it into the case. The dimensions of the o-ring I used were 17.2mm OD, 14mm ID (1.6mm width). Reinstall the back casing and dab a few drops of loctite on the threads before installing.

The compass is now highly functional and really looks the business. I keep it on my keyring and it gets used constantly."
