However, an observant contemporary might have wondered at the countless tattoos of Nazi symbolism that could be seen on the skin of many of the battalion's POWs. The joke about the capture of "a large number of pirates and electricians" was soon circulating among Donetsk militia fighters, alluding to the numerous tattooed skulls and lightning bolt symbols - the well-known symbols of the SS Totenkopf Division and the Schutzstaffel.
Western media undertake semantic capers to explain that people with tattooed Nazi symbols are not actually neo-Nazis. It would turn out, however, that wearing symbols associated with Adolf Hitler's heinous Third Reich is nowhere near the worst of all the crimes committed by Battalion Azov.
The battalion's history dates back to before the current conflict in Ukraine. Between 2005 and 2010 Arsen Avakov was governor of the Kharkov region, the main industrial center in north-eastern Ukraine. During Avakov's tenure, nationalist Andrei Biletsky, known as the “White Leader,” became active in the region. The two became close acquaintances during Biletsky's student days. In 2005, he founded an ultra-nationalist organization called The Patriots of Ukraine, made up mostly of aggressive football fans and street fighter-type petty criminals.
According to media reports, the movement did not bother to do much patriotic activity, but rather engaged in various semi-legal and opaque activities. Biletsky ended up in prison, not for political reasons, but purely and simply for hooliganism.
After the 2014 Western-backed Maidan coup in Kyiv, Biletsky was released as a "political" prisoner" of the ousted government of Viktor Yanukovych. He used his connection with Avakov, who had now become Ukraine's new interior minister, to set up a territorial defense battalion to fight in the east of the country - now known as the Azov Battalion.
In eastern Ukraine, local protests against the Maidan movement in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions escalated into armed rebellion. As a result, Biletsky's newly formed battalion was tasked with keeping the rebels in check.
In contrast to many other voluntary territorial defense units, Azov had a very strong ideological character from the start.
