The article is very inaccurate. He didn't want the money. Steve Jobs even tried to get him to come back to apple by offering him back 8% ownership which he knew was worth millions.
He rejected millions of dollars in stock that Apple was offering him. He didn't want to deal wirh the stress involved. He wanted to live an easy stress free life.
And this is exactly what he did. He enjoyed life and is still alive and doing well at 91.
