#YouTubers’ #Side:
YouTuber #MohakMangal sparked the controversy by accusing ANI of “extortion” after receiving copyright strikes for using 9-11 seconds of ANI footage in his videos about the Kolkata rape case and Operation Sindoor. ANI allegedly demanded ₹45-50 lakh to remove the strikes and avoid channel termination. Mangal argues this constitutes fair use, as he used minimal footage for commentary purposes. Other creators like #DhruvRathee and #KunalKamra have joined the outcry, calling it an “extortion racket”.
#ANI’s Position: ANI maintains it’s protecting its #intellectual #property rights and that any use of its footage, regardless of duration, requires permission. The agency offers licensing deals to creators, with costs reportedly ranging from ₹15-50 lakh annually. ANI has not issued public statements directly addressing the extortion allegations.

The Mechanism:
ANI exploits YouTube’s #threestrike #policy, where three copyright strikes within 90 days result in #permanent #channel #deletion. This creates leverage for ANI to negotiate expensive licensing deals with threatened creators.

The controversy has prompted calls for copyright law reforms and clearer fair use guidelines in India.
