Dr. Manmohan Singh
Dr. Manmohan Singh bids farewell at the age of 92. It was a privilege as also proud moment to have worked with him when he was Governor of the RBI as well as when he was the FM. Two incidents from my association remain ever vivid in my memory.
First one was way back in the mid-Eighties when I was Member of Faculty in the College of Agricultural Banking, Pune. In the annual meeting convened by the Bank with the RBI Officers' Association, I represented Pune unit. After discussion on main agenda was over, Dr. Singh asked whether there was any other issue. Being young I raised my hand and stated that most of the Members of Faculty were spending far higher amount than Rs.50 (then) granted by the Bank for purchase of books. After a few queries, Dr. Singh ordered to raise the allowance with immediate effect to at least Rs.200 per month.
Second one was much later in the early Nineties when I used to visit Delhi fairly regularly to assist the then FM (Dr. Singh) in answering questions raised in the Parliament. These questions pertained to policies and measures for economic reforms. In one such meeting, the discussion prolonged beyond 1 pm, when he said that let us meet again after lunch. He left the room. We were looking at each other and asked the FM officials about arrangement for lunch. They said there was no arrangement as no one had anticipated the meeting to be prolonged. Someone from the Ministry informed him and at his instance snacks were hurriedly arranged. We later came to know that Dr. Singh used to bring his own lunch from home.
Not only India, the World has lost an erudite and scholarly person who always encouraged furthering of knowledge and skill. Down to earth person, he was soft spoken but determined. He never bragged about himself and his achievements / contributions for improving our economy, removing poverty and making Indians proud.
May his soul rest in peace. My prayers to God to bestow courage to the members of the bereaved family.
