SBI/Public sectors bank's focus is on making banking accessible even to the remotest and poorest demographic. You will find an SBI branch in a very small town but HDFC might not have a presence there.
When you look at these banks from an investor perspective your argument makes sense. But you can't compare a public sector bank with a private bank as the primary focus/mandate is different. The purpose of both banks is different.
1. Where SBI aims at reaching to all and giving bare minimum services to even last person in the que, HDFC eyes on profit.
2. SBI works for many while HDFC believes in providing best services.
3. SBI lends and deals on indications of government, while HDFC does not do the same. Corporates are profit oriented while public sector banks' first priority is to service niche areas. Kudos to SBI for achieving such results. (These are some of the comments on LinkedIn)
