𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚’𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐝 hashtag#𝐈𝐌𝐎 2024!

The 65th IMO was held in hashtag#𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐡, hashtag#𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, from July 11 to July 22, 2024. Among 108 participating countries, 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 4𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, with the USA, China, and South Korea taking the top three spots, respectively. The IMO is the 𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 for school and college students.

The 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐈𝐌𝐎 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐧 1959 and has been conducted annually since, except for 1980. Over 100 countries participate each year, with each country having a team of six students. This year’s Indian team included 𝐀𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐲𝐚 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐤𝐚𝐭 𝐆𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐡, 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢, 𝐊𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐯 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐫, 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐮, 𝐀𝐫𝐣𝐮𝐧 𝐆𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐚, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐫𝐚. Among them, the first four received gold medals, Arjun received a silver medal, and Siddhartha received an encouragement medal.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭?

In this competition, each student must solve 6 questions, each worth 7 points. The competition is held over two consecutive days, with participants given four and a half hours each day to solve three questions. The maximum score a student can achieve is 42 points. The total score of the six students is used to determine the country’s team score and global ranking.

The syllabus for this competition includes hashtag#𝐀𝐥𝐠𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚, hashtag#𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐲, hashtag#𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 hashtag#𝐍𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲 for students from grades 8 to 10. Calculators are not allowed in this exam.

In this year’s IMO, the top five countries’ scores are as follows: hashtag#𝐔𝐒𝐀 192, hashtag#𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚 190, hashtag#𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐊𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐚 168, hashtag#𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 167, and hashtag#𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐮𝐬 165.

The next three IMO competitions will be held in hashtag#𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚 (2025), hashtag#𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚 (2026), and hashtag#𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐲 (2027).

Since 1959, China has won the most gold medals (180), followed by the USA (146), Russia (111), South Korea (93), Hungary (86), and Romania. India has won 20 gold medals.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝?

To promote advanced mathematics education and development in India, the Government of India established the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) in 1983. Since 1986, the NBHM has been responsible for organizing the mathematics Olympiad activities, currently conducted in collaboration with the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education in Mumbai. The primary objective of this initiative is to nurture mathematical talent among high school students. The NBHM is responsible for selecting and training the Indian team for the IMO each year. India is divided into 32 regions for the purpose of organizing the mathematics Olympiad. From these regions, the top six students are selected to form the Indian team, who then receive training from the best mathematicians in the country. This rigorous selection and training process

ensures that the Indian team is well-prepared for the international competition.

Next year’s IMO will be held in Melbourne, Australia.
