At present, only six states of our country have a legislative council. They are
Andhra Pradesh,
Telangana,
Karnataka,
Maharashtra,
Bihar, and
Uttar Pradesh.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 (𝐂𝐈𝐈) is a crucial tool used by taxpayers in India to calculate the long-term capital gains arising from the sale of immovable property, securities, and jewellery after adjusting for inflation.

The CII reflects the inflation in the economy, which causes the prices of goods and services to increase over time. This adjustment allows taxpayers to factor in inflation when computing their capital gains, thereby potentially lowering their tax liabilities.

1. 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐈𝐈: The CII is used to adjust the purchase price of assets to account for inflation. This adjustment helps in calculating the long-term capital gains more accurately, reflecting the real value increase in the asset over time due to inflation.

2. 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞: For the financial year 2024-25, the CII has been updated to 363. This is an increase from the previous year's CII of 348 for 2023-24 and 331 for 2022-23.

3. 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬: When a taxpayer sells an asset, the purchase price of the asset is adjusted using the CII to arrive at the inflation-adjusted purchase price. The formula used is:

Inflation-Adjusted Purchase Price = Original Purchase Price *(CII of Year of Sale/CII of Year of Purchase)
This adjusted purchase price is then subtracted from the sale price to calculate the long-term capital gains.

4. 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐈𝐈 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞: The increase in the CII to 363 for the financial year 2024-25 represents a 4.3% increase from the previous year. This is consistent with the retail inflation rate of 4.83% recorded in April 2024. The higher CII helps in lowering the taxable capital gains, thereby allowing taxpayers to claim larger tax rebates.

In summary, the updated CII for the current fiscal year helps taxpayers in adjusting their capital gains for inflation, ensuring that they do not overpay taxes on the gains that are merely due to inflation. This is beneficial for taxpayers as it aligns their taxable gains more closely with the real increase in asset value.

 True aliveness comes from being in the presence of ourselves. The quality of our relationship with ourselves directly impacts our relationships with others. Comfort in society is impossible without first being comfortable alone.
