(Production Linked
Incentive)
PLI Scheme and its relevance in achieving India's Five Trillion Economy By 2021-25

βœ…Words limit 250

βœ…Self Written:-

In budget 2021-22, the Finance minister allotted 1.97 lakh crore for the PLI scheme in 13 sectors for the next five years. This is aimed at bringing Indian production quantity and quality to global standards. In this essay we will see what is PLI, why is it needed?, what will be its benefits, and what can be done further to enhance this initiative. Production Linked Scheme aims to give companies incentive to companies on incremental sales (over FY 2019-20) from products manufactured in domestic units. It offers incentive of 4%-6% on incremental sales. Initially, it was limited to only mobile, medical equipment, and pharma sector but attributing to its success, it is extended to other sectors too. Amid the COVID pandemic and lockdown worldwide the global supply chain took a hit.
It exposed the vulnerability of over-dependence on imports. It also highlighted the need of being self-reliant. And production and manufacturing units prepare the foundation rock for a self-reliant economy.

βœ…Amid lacunas like disrupted power, lack of credit, competition from global imports, etc. Our industries needed support and government-provided that support I from of PLI scheme.
βœ… It will not only help India to match the global level of production but will also make India an important part of a global supply chain in the offing. Other than that, it will generate employment that is in dire need after lockdown is over.
βœ…It is also important for our V shape recovery of the economy. Not only that but it will give a push to the economic growth in terms of GDP, GNP, etc. Balance of Payment, Current account, and capital account too will see positive externalities due to this scheme.
βœ…Above all the credit culture and ranking in international reports and indices too will see a rise

βœ…For further developments, more sectors can be included under this scheme. And a separate department for every sector can be formulated on Ad-Hoc basis to keep an eye on the progress of the scheme in a dynamic way rather than post facto inspection. India aspires to be a 5 trillion economy by 2024-25 and this scheme is one of the strong pillars in realizing that aspiration.
