RBI has launched e-Rupee (Central Bank Digital Currency) on a pilot basis in four cities and with four banks. Some of the important features of e-Rupee (retail) are:
1. It will be in the form of a digital token and will be a fiat currency and legal tender
2. It will be issued in the same denominations that paper currency and coins are currently issued
3. It will be distributed through intermediaries i.e. banks
4. Transactions can be both person to person and person to merchant (payments to merchants can be made using QR Codes)
5. Users will be able to transact with e-rupee through a digital wallet offered by the participating banks and stored on mobile phones and other devices
6. E-rupee would offer features of physical cash like trust, safety and settlement facility
7. E-rupee will not earn any interest like cash
8. E-rupee can be converted to other forms of money like deposits with bank
E-Rupee has been demarcated into two broad categories - retail and wholesale
