"The death of a farmer had to be immediately announced to his horses and cattle, and when a bee-keeper died, the bees had to be told; otherwise, the animals and bees would die out. The horse was not allowed to carry its master to the cemetery; if it did, it would die or fall sick. These beliefs, still held in Lithuanian villages at the beginning of the twentieth century, are the last traces of the great love that existed between man and animal."
