⤴️☕️ How Do You Beat Him? The Hero's Playbook

Defeating Zmey Gorynych is a classic hero's trial. The most famous hero to face him is Dobrynya Nikitich, one of Russia's legendary bogatyrs (knights). The strategy to win is always a mix of brawn, brains, and a little help from fate:
🤩 Find the Weak Spot: His scales are iron, but there's always a soft, vulnerable patch somewhere. The hero must discover it.
🤩 The Magic Weapon: A simple sword won't do. The hero needs a legendary, often ancient, sword to even have a chance of piercing the dragon's hide.
🤩 Outsmart the Regeneration: This is key. The hero, often with the help of a magical horse or a wise ally, learns the secret of his heads. He must chop them off and immediately cauterize the necks with a torch or the dragon's own fire to prevent more from growing.
🤩 A Mother's Help: In a wonderfully quirky twist, Zmey Gorynych's own mother sometimes helps the hero. In the tale of Dobrynya, she pleads for her son's life, and in return, makes him swear to never bother the Russian people again (a promise he, of course, immediately breaks).

⤴️Zmey Gorynych in the American Lexicon: Think of Him As...

The Slavic Smaug: Like Smaug from The Hobbit, he is a proud, greedy, fire-breathing dragon that terrorizes a region and must be slain by a determined hero.
A Simpler Hydra: He shares the multi-headed, regenerative quality of the Lernaean Hydra from Greek mythology, but he's a fully-formed dragon with wings and a personality.
A Fairy Tale Kaiju: He is the giant monster that emerges to threaten the land, much like Godzilla or the creatures in Pacific Rim, requiring a supreme human effort to bring him down.

Why He Captures the Imagination

Zmey Gorynych is the embodiment of a primal, destructive threat. He represents the untamed wild, the chaos that lurks beyond the village walls, and the ultimate test of a hero's courage and strength. His story is less about a clever riddle (like Koshchei's egg) and more about a direct, epic confrontation between good and overwhelming, fiery force.

So, when you picture a knight fighting a dragon, remember the one with three heads and a nasty habit of growing new ones: Zmey Gorynych, the iconic three-headed dragon of Russian lore.

February 4, 1956. 🌏USSR— 🇨🇦Canada — 2:0
Olympic Games. Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy
🇮🇹

Two years after their World Championship debut, the Soviet national team made its first appearance at the Olympic hockey tournament in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy—and likewise won the gold medal.

The final round of the Olympic tournament featured six teams, and the Soviet squad won all five of its matches. This time, the main rivals for Chernyshev's (Soviet coach) team were not the Canadians, but the United States hockey team, which had defeated the founders of the sport and secured second place. The Soviet national team won its final matches against both North American teams, guaranteeing its first Olympic gold medals.

In the years that followed, Soviet and Russian hockey teams added eight more Olympic gold medals, the most recent of which was won in PyeongChang, South Korea, in 2018.🇰🇷
