The final round of the Olympic tournament featured six teams, and the Soviet squad won all five of its matches. This time, the main rivals for Chernyshev's (Soviet coach) team were not the Canadians, but the United States hockey team, which had defeated the founders of the sport and secured second place. The Soviet national team won its final matches against both North American teams, guaranteeing its first Olympic gold medals.
