While Koshchei the Immortal is the ultimate evil sorcerer of Russian tales, Zmey Gorynych (pronounced ZMAY gor-EE-nich) is his fire-breathing, city-smashing attack dog. Think of him as the Slavic answer to the Hydra, but with a dragon's body, a personality, and a taste for kidnapping princesses and laying waste to villages.

He is the classic dragon of the region—the monster under the mountain, the threat that mobilizes the hero and sends a kingdom into panic. The official origin of name "Gorynych" is considered the word "gora" (mountain), implying it is a mountain-dweller or is as huge as a mountain although the association with "goret" (to burn) is a powerful and perfectly logical piece of folk etymology that has undoubtedly enriched the image of the dragon for generations of listeners.

⤴️ 📚 The Anatomy of a Nightmare: What Does He Look Like?

The name gives the first clue. "Gorynych" comes from the Russian word gora (гора), meaning "mountain." So, he is often "Zmey, Son of the Mountain" or "The Mountain Dragon." He's not just a big lizard; he's a force of nature.
His standard features are:
🤩 Three Heads (Sometimes More!): This is his signature. Most often, he has three heads, but in some tales, he has six, nine, or even twelve. Each head can think and breathe fire independently, making him a multi-directional threat.
🤩 Green Scales: He is almost always depicted with tough, green, iron-like scales that make him nearly invincible to swords and arrows.
🤩 Sharp Claws & Spikes: He's a fully-realized dragon, with massive wings, a long tail, and sharp claws on each paw.
🤩 Fire and Regeneration: He breathes fire, of course. But the most terrifying trick in his arsenal? If you chop off one of his heads, two more can grow back in its place. The only way to stop this is to sear the stump with fire before the new heads can sprout.

Zmey Gorynych isn't a complex, philosophical villain like Koshchei. He's a more primal, straightforward threat. His hobbies include:

1️⃣. Kidnapping: He has a particular fondness for abducting beautiful young women, often a princess or the hero's sister. He doesn't always want to marry them; sometimes he just hoards them as treasure in his mountain lair.

2️⃣. Terrorizing the Countryside: He burns crops, destroys villages, and demands a grim tribute from fearful peasants—sometimes their livestock, sometimes their children.

3️⃣. Working for Koshchei: In many of the most famous stories, Zmey Gorynych is the chief enforcer and flying steed for Koshchei the Immortal. He's the muscle to Koshchei's brains.
