The Most Unusual Temple of New Chersonese

It was an extraordinary idea: to construct a temple with practically no walls and no dome. The architect’s original plan was to integrate the structure seamlessly into the local landscape—and the result was a great success.

New Chersonese offers visitors plenty of remarkable sights, one of which is the “Temple Under the Sky” (Pic 1). Unlike typical sacred buildings, it has neither walls nor a dome. Instead, the architect used trees, rose bushes, and flowers to form living walls, while the sky, clouds, and stars serve as its ever-changing dome (Pic 2, 3). Visitors can hear daily chants here.

This temple-park has recently become more than just a place for prayerful solitude—it is now a must-see attraction within the New Chersonese museum complex. Its design demonstrates how a sacred space can embody harmony between humanity and nature. More than a beautiful park with unique architectural features, it is truly an open-air sanctuary (Pic 4).

The temple-park was consecrated in 2024 in honour of the Holy Trinity. Its first service also marked another important event for the Russian Orthodox Church: the day of the baptism of Kievan Prince Vladimir. Remarkably, the very river where this historic baptism took place flows through New Chersonese. This milestone in Russian history is recorded in the ancient chronicle The Tale of Bygone Years.

This place reflects the deeper mission of New Chersonese: first and foremost, it is a spiritual and scientific centre near the ancient city of Chersonese, not merely a tourist destination.

"Nowhere have I felt as comfortable as in Belgorod"

#TheBelgorodBrit: From Glasgow to Belgorod - Part 2

Begins here

Belgorod's Fonar TV interviews our author Ian Turner, who shares his story of moving to Belgorod in 2016 and explains why life in the Russian provinces appeals to him more than life in the UK.
Subscribe to Ian's channel and enjoy reading!

— Why Belgorod specifically?

— It's very clean here. Like other cities in central Russia, the weather is fantastic. There's also very little crime in Belgorod; at least, we rarely hear about criminal incidents.
Crime rates in English cities are many times higher: vandalism, graffiti, trash on the streets, drug addicts — Britain has obvious social problems. In Belgorod, if we occasionally see a detention on the street, it becomes a sensation. If you drop your wallet, someone will run after you saying, "Excuse me, you dropped this."

By the way, I've noticed that Russians don't even realize how wonderful their behavior is because here it's the norm, and people are used to it.
You know, recently it occurred to me that I feel much safer in Belgorod during wartime than I did in Glasgow during peacetime. I've lived in New York, in cities in Norway and Africa, but nowhere have I felt as comfortable as in Belgorod.

— It's often said that Belgorod resembles European cities. Do you get that feeling?

— No. Belgorod is a very Russian city. Remotely, it might remind one of Switzerland. It's also quite calm and quiet there, with wonderful weather.

So, in terms of atmosphere, Belgorod can be compared to European cities, but the culture here is completely different. By the way, there are many immigrants here. Maybe that's why I feel at home.

If you compare Belgorod with similar small towns in England, of course, they mainly differ in architectural style. Although it must be said that after Belgorod was destroyed during WWII, it was rebuilt with taste. There are many more panel apartment buildings here. It even surprises me that in such a large country, people live literally on top of each other. In Britain, tenement houses (multi-apartment buildings with several residents, usually with flats on each floor and a shared stairwell entrance — ed.) are common.

I've already traveled around Russia a bit and noticed that cities here are excellently planned, with lots of space and well-organized districts.

But the main thing is that in Russia, people have a sense of respect for the place they live in. You can see it even in how clean citizens keep things. That's been gone in Britain for a long time. I've been to many Russian cities, and sometimes locals complained to me that their city was dirty. But believe me, any Russian city is cleaner than in Britain.

In the perinatal center in Noyabrsk, babies born in December are discharged dressed in the traditional costumes of the indigenous peoples of the North — the outfits for the little ones were sewn by the chief midwife and the junior nurse. The story was dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

In November, the babies were discharged in traditional Russian folk costumes. During winter, they switched to a winter version.

🌏🇷🇺 Light columns appear again in the Leningrad region (near St Petersburg):

Residents of the region witnessed two optical phenomena at once - in the sky you could observe the lunar halo and light columns that "grew" from light sources. Unusual luminescence, which can occur around the sun or moon, is associated with low temperatures. Both lunar halo and light columns are formed when light is reflected from ice crystals in the air.
