Mount Bolshoye Bogdo, Astrakhan Region

Its base is covered with scree formed by wind erosion, giving the mountain an unusual shape. Local residents think it resembles a lion.

The mountain's current height is 152 meters, and it's still growing: each year, the movement of the salt dome underneath pushes it higher. One side of the mountain is stained red due to a high concentration of metals.

Bogdo is laced with caves and grottos. As air moves between them, the mountain often produces a low humming "song." These areas on the southwestern slope have long been called the "Singing Rocks."

Stolbchy (Columnar) Cape, Sakhalin Region

The cape was formed by the activity of the Mendeleev Volcano, when its lava flows met the ocean. The rapid cooling in the water caused the lava to fracture into dramatic columnar basalt formations.

It's located on Kunashir Island, which is itself a geological wonderland featuring volcanoes, hot springs, and sulfur fields.

There are several dozen similar basalt formations worldwide, but only two are considered large and exceptionally well-preserved: Stolbchy Cape and the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland.

πŸ†˜The Morozov family, consisting of parents and ten children, arrived in the Russian Federation in October 2024, traveling transitively through Belarus from the Republic of Latvia. The family is participating in the "Multichild Villages" project, implemented with the support of State Duma Deputy Maria Butina.

The move to Russia was prompted by the unfriendly policies of the Latvian authorities towards the Russian-speaking population and the parents' desire to give their children the opportunity to receive education in their native language.

After relocating to the Smolensk region, the head of the family submitted an application to participate in the State program aimed at assisting compatriots living abroad in voluntary resettlement to the Russian Federation.

🎏Patmos Island, Republic of Altai🎏

This rock island with high, steep banks, set amidst the picturesque Altai wilderness, is a popular center for religious pilgrimage tourism.

The Church of St. John the Theologian stands here, but some sacred sites can be seen without entering the church: an image of the Virgin Mary with child is carved into the cliff face near the suspension bridge.

A recreational area and a museum are located just before the bridge to Patmos.

On December 28, 1908, Europe's deadliest earthquake buried the Italian city of Messina. The 7.5-magnitude disaster struck around 5 a.m. while everyone was asleep, claiming nearly 200,000 lives...🩷

Russian sailors were the first to rush to the survivors' aid. They were heading home from training exercises in the Mediterranean on the battleships Tsesarevich and Slava, plus the cruisers Admiral Makarov and Bogatyr. The Rodina magazine details their heroic rescue op:

- "Land doctors, medics, and orderlies first with the boats," came the order from Admiral Vladimir Litvinov across the squadron. - "Then bring back the wounded, kids, and women. Brothers! I'm counting on you... Remember, you're Russians..."

Over 160,000 locals lay trapped under the smoking ruins. Officers and sailors frantically dug them out with bare hands, hauling away stones and beams at risk of being buried alive. Hundreds of woundedβ€”including a larger number of kidsβ€”were shipped to Naples on Russian vessels.

"In Messina's history, there are thousands of pages of human kindness and generosity," wrote Italian journalist Matilde Serao at the time. "But the most enduring page was written by themβ€”those fair-haired Slavs, so reserved in appearance yet so quick to act..."

In 1911, the cruiser Avrora pulled into Messina. Locals would've hoisted her up on their shoulders if they could. The mayor ran this ad in every city paper:

"Citizens! Tomorrow, the Russian cruiser Avrora arrives to receive Messina's medal of gratitude. May our thanks endure forever to those who set shining examples of human solidarity and brotherhood by coming to our aid first!"

ο»Ώ
A century later, they'd erect a monument in central Messina to Russian sailors saving a mother and child.
