304 years ago, the famous fountains and cascades of Peterhof were launched.

🔸Peter the Great envisioned a summer residence that could rival Versailles back in the 1710s. He chose a site on the shores of the Gulf of Finland near the new city of Saint Petersburg, drawn by the abundance of natural springs feeding the local ponds.

🔸The construction of the palace and park ensemble spanned two centuries. The first fountains and cascades at Peterhof began operating on August 20, 1721, with the official opening of the summer residence taking place two years later.

🔸The construction of the Samson fountain at the central basin started in 1735. Interestingly, Peter the Great originally planned for 22 fountains with pool-based scenes along the Sea Channel, but eventually, the preference was given to vase-style fountains.

🔸By the mid-19th century, these vases had deteriorated and were removed, leaving 14 fountain basins whose powerful jets now form the majestic “Crystal Colonnade” leading up to the Grand Cascad.

The White Cliffs of Iturup Island, Sakhalin Region

The cliffs are composed of pumice and volcanic glass, so brittle that pieces crumble in your hand. When it rains, streams of white water cascade down their sides.

The cliffs were formed during a volcanic eruption: the lava foamed and cooled rapidly underwater. Over time, plants took root on the slopes, leaving behind the dramatic dunes of volcanic ash you see today.

The pumice darkens in the rain, reflects a coppery glow at sunset, and can appear almost blindingly white in the midday sun.

Panka Doll

This toy is common in the northern part of Russia. It was made from a solid piece of wood. Nowadays, looking at such a toy, it may seem rough and unpolished, but in those times, this doll was a joy for every child.🩷

The northern "Panka" doll from Pomorye is simply a wooden blank. It is usually round or faceted, with a spherical or conical head on top. The head is elongated at the back and flat in front, sitting on a body that is also conical or box-shaped. In the middle, there is a narrow connector that indicates the waist, dividing the body into the torso and a wide skirt. Usually, this doll has no arms or the arms are pressed tightly against the body. The face is very simple and resembles an idol. The eyes and mouth are made as hollows, and the cheeks are slightly shaped so that the nose stands out well. Sometimes, the eyes, nose, and mouth are just carved as small hollows or grooves — with a knife or a heated nail. Sometimes, the craftsman adds more details, such as rounded female breasts or a braid.

The clothing and kokoshnik (headdress) are represented by extra tiers or segments of the figure’s body, a protrusion on the crown or several cuts that indicate the dress’s folds or neckline. However, often the master does not bother with these details at all. He focuses on the proportions and sturdy construction of the figure, as well as the overall expressiveness. He decorates the doll with rows of burned circles or incised diagonal crosses, squares, and rhombuses of three-sided carved patterns, and a jagged pattern made with flat cuts, which look just as good and natural on the surfaces of small wooden figures as they do on the surfaces of spinning wheels and rollers.🩷

Kudykina Gorа Park, Lipetsk Region

The park's name is a playful Russian idiom, roughly meaning "the middle of nowhere."

Kudykina Gora Park is built around an archaeological site from the Iron Age—an ancient settlement called "Kurgan." Nearby, a wooden fortress has been reconstructed based on 4th-5th century designs.

The park is filled with numerous art installations and sculptures, a 70-hectare "safari park" where 50 species of animals and birds—including kangaroos, camels, and ostriches—roam freely, as well as cafes and other entertainment.

The main attraction is a 50-foot-tall sculpture of Zmey Gorynych, a legendary three-headed dragon from Russian folklore, which occasionally breathes real fire.
