As parents, we often focus on setting rules—bedtime schedules, screen time limits, manners at the table. But have you ever noticed that rules alone don’t always work? Children are more likely to resist and push back when they feel disconnected from us.

Why? Because rules without a strong emotional bond can feel like control rather than guidance. But when our children feel loved, heard, and understood, they are more open to respecting boundaries—not out of fear, but out of trust.

💡 Connection before correction:
✔️ Listen to their feelings, even when you disagree.
✔️ Spend quality time together without any agenda.

Parenting is not just about enforcing rules—it’s about building a relationship where respect goes both ways.

When a child makes a mistake, our response shapes how they learn and grow. If we punish, they may learn to fear authority—but if we guide, they learn to think critically, take responsibility, and problem-solve.

💡 Instead of asking, "How do I make my child pay for this mistake?", try asking, "How can I help my child learn from this?"

✔️ Understand the root cause – What led to the behaviour?
✔️ Guide with empathy – Teach skills instead of instilling fear.
✔️ Focus on solutions – How can they make it right? What can they do differently next time?

Raising problem-solvers means modelling patience, understanding, and constructive problem-solving ourselves.

TOUCH Marriage Support (TMS) recently hosted a heartwarming “Building Connections, Celebrating Marriage” workshop specially designed for parents of children with autism.

Jointly organised by *TMS* and *ARK Social*, in collaboration with *Families for Life (FFL)*, the workshop provided a rare and meaningful opportunity for these couples to take a break from their caregiving responsibilities and focus on nurturing their relationship. Throughout the session, couples enjoyed uninterrupted time to reconnect. Meanwhile, their children were well taken care of through a dedicated child-minding programme run by ARK Social, allowing parents to fully immerse themselves in the experience.

Strong marriages build strong families. Let's keep creating spaces where love can grow and flourish for marriages and families! Find out more about ‘Building Connections, Celebrating Marriage’ over here: www.touch.org.sg/bccm!

Why won’t they just listen?!

Every parent hits that wall, whether it's a toddler screaming “No!” or a teen rolling their eyes mid-sentence. But here’s the truth: Kids don’t learn from lectures. They learn from connection.

Before you correct, ask yourself: “Have I built the bridge today?”
Because the stronger the connection, the easier the correction.

—————

Try this today:
Catch them doing something right
“I noticed how you helped your brother. That was kind.”

Ask good coaching questions
Instead of “Why didn’t you pack your bag?!”
Try: “What do you think you’ll need tomorrow?”

🎁 End the day with presence, not pressure
Sit with them 5 mins before bed. No agenda. Just be there.

—————

It’s not magic but it works. Because kids tune in better when they feel safe, seen, and respected.
