Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my deepest concern regarding the escalating violence against students across universities in Bangladesh. Reports indicate that government-backed militants have attacked peaceful student protests at Dhaka University, Chittagong University, and potentially other universities nationwide. These attacks, involving weapons and resulting in injuries and arrests, represent a blatant disregard for student safety and fundamental rights.

The ongoing student movement in Bangladesh is a powerful expression of young people's desire for a more democratic, just, and equitable society. However, their peaceful demonstrations have been met with brutal suppression by authorities. Government-affiliated militants appear emboldened to attack students with impunity, aiming to instill fear and silence dissent.

Equally concerning is the reluctance of the Bangladeshi media to fully report on these atrocities, possibly due to fear of government retaliation. This lack of transparency and accountability further empowers the perpetrators and leaves the victims without recourse.

I urge the international community to take immediate action to address this crisis. You must call upon the Bangladeshi government to:

• Condemn the violence against students in the strongest possible terms.

• Hold those responsible for these attacks accountable through fair and transparent investigations.

• Protect the fundamental rights of all citizens, including the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
