There are many valuable skills that an engineer must have. Ability to write code in particular languages is one of those skills.

However, we call ourselves “engineers“ instead of “coders” for very good reason.

The valuable skills we have include
estimating costs and consequences,
turning fantastical concepts into practical products,
coordinating between many teams,
learning new skills & concepts,
choosing the best tools for the job out of thousands,
continuously considering how an end user might think of the product,
Interpreting the unsaid requirements,
smoke testing and CI/CD maintenance,
balancing the theoretical/ideal with the real world,
and much more.

These are just some of the aspects which build the value that a good engineer has.

These are the skills we must hone as the role of coding is passed from humans to AIs

Reading over this, my main concern is privacy.

It seems like one fundamental way this works, is that it tries to de-anonymize traffic. The mechanisms by which it does this are reasonable and have realistic and agreeable goals, but the end result might make tracking much much easier.

talking to other engineers about this Thain IPv8 proposal, I think my current conclusion is:

There’s a lot of good to be taken away from this, but it’s overzealous and confuses too many boundaries. It mixes too many concepts together into one, which should remain separate for many reasons.

But the core concept of extending IPv4 and the nuances of how that’s handled is elegant and very practical. I think that should be taken very seriously by the tech industry.
