A bug in Zcash's privacy system existed since 2022 that could have allowed someone to create fake ZEC coins. A researcher recently proved it was possible in a test environment, and the bug was patched on June 2.
The concern is that because Zcash transactions are private, nobody can verify whether someone secretly exploited the bug before it was fixed. Unlike Bitcoin, where the total supply can be independently audited, Zcash's privacy design makes that impossible.
The team says they found no evidence of abuse, but they also cannot prove it never happened.
