🟢 Endotracheal tube
is a flexible tube inserted into the trachea through the mouth or nose to secure the airway and provide mechanical ventilation.
🔵 Confirmation of placement
Chest rise
Bilateral air entry
End-tidal CO₂ (gold standard)
Chest X-ray
🔵 Types
1- Cuffed (for adult ) معاها بالون
2- Uncuffed tubes ( for children < 8 yrs), less injury and necrosis
🔵 Contraindications (relative)
- Severe facial trauma (consider surgical airway)
- Upper airway obstruction (may need tracheostomy/cricothyrotomy)

🔵 Indications of ETT
Endotracheal intubation is indicated to secure airway, support ventilation, and protect against aspiration.
1) Respiratory indications
- Upper airway obstruction:(Epiglottitis, Severe croup, Diphtheria, burns, Angioneurotic edema)
- Lower airway as ( Apnea, Acute RF)
2) Neurological indications
LOC, Coma, Paralysis of chest muscles (e.g. GBS, polio)
Absence of protective reflexes (cough + gag reflex)
3) Difficult mask ventilation
Failed or impossible bag-mask ventilation
4) Anaesthesia support
5) Cardiac arrest
6) Drug administration( Epinephrine, Atropine, Lidocaine)
7) Aspiration for culture
🔵 Complications of ETT
Complications may occur during insertion or prolonged use.
🔴 1) Misplacement
Esophageal intubation → hypoxia
Main bronchus intubation → unilateral ventilation
🔴 2) Airway injury
Tracheal perforation
Esophageal perforation
Vocal cord damage
🔴 3) Long-term complications
Subglottic stenosis (>3–4 weeks)
Laryngeal edema after extubation
Mucosal necrosis
🔴 4) Ventilation complications
Barotrauma
Pneumothorax
🔴 5) Mechanical problems
Tube obstruction
Tube kinking → hypoxia
