United Nations experts and an independent international inquiry have called for the immediate, unconditional and safe release of Palestinian paediatrician Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, amid credible reports that severe abuse, torture and deteriorating health have placed his life at grave risk.
Israeli forces detained Dr Abu Safiya on 27 December 2024 during a raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital, one of the last functioning medical facilities in northern Gaza at the time.
He has since been held for more than 18 months without formal charges or trial.
