A senior Israeli military official has warned that regular combat forces are approaching a critical threshold as prolonged assaults across multiple fronts deepen severe manpower shortages.
Brigadier General Shai Taib told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee that urgent measures are needed, including an effective draft law, longer mandatory service and reforms to reserve regulations.
Estimates put the current shortfall at 12,000 to 17,000 troops, including up to 8,000 combat personnel.
The warning comes amid controversy over continued exemptions for ultra-Orthodox religious students, while annual enlistment from the community remains at around 2,800.

Physicians for Human Rights-'Israel' (PHRI) has issued an urgent warning over the condition of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, saying his life may be in immediate danger following a recent lawyer visit inside detention facilities in 'Israel'.
The group said attorney Nasser Odeh met Abu Safiya inside the underground interrogation unit known as “Rakefet”, located within Nitzan Prison.
According to PHRI, the lawyer reported that Dr. Abu Safiya was brought to the meeting handcuffed and shackled, with visible injuries and bruising to his head, face and neck.
He was reportedly struggling to breathe and speak, appeared severely exhausted, and lost consciousness several times during the visit.

Senior Israeli assessments suggest that Mojtaba's desire for revenge is deeply personal, driven both by Iran's military setbacks and the killing of his father, while senior IRGC figures, including commander Ahmad Vahidi, are reportedly reinforcing calls for retaliation.
