The bar graph compares a ten-year difference (1998 and 2008) of freelancers’ share in total workforce in five European countries. Overall, despite declining figures, Greece and Turkey had significantly more self-employed people than those in the rest given nations. At the same time, relatively more people became freelancers in Russia, Slovakia, and Czech republic. Yet, the ranking of countries according total amount of self-employed people remained unchanged, Turkey and Russia showing the highest and the lowest shares accordingly.

As for the countries with higher self-employment percentages, Turkey dominated in each year although more people begun working in organizations there. Almost 55% of total workforce controlled their income source independently in 1998 but it declined to below 40% in the next year. It was followed by Greece which showed about 10% difference, with a drop to 33% in 2008.

In Czech republic, Slovakia, and Russia, however, higher share of total workforce worked either for government or private sector. While it was about 15% with a 4% growth in Czech in 2008, almost the same increase to 11% was shown in Slovakia. The least amount of workers were self-employed in Russia as it was only about 5% in each year, with almost unnoticeable increase.
