The elephant trunk dark gas nebula in the IC1396 star-forming region of the Cepheus constellation

The Elephant Trunk nebula wriggles around an emission nebula and young star cluster in the IC 1396 complex, high in the sky in the constellation Cepheus. The cosmic elephant trunk, also known as vdB 142, is more than 20 light years long.

This color picture is composed of images taken with narrow-band filters that allow radiation from ionized hydrogen, sulfur and oxygen atoms to pass through.

It clearly shows bright bands that border cold interstellar dust and gas clusters. These dark, mustache-like clouds contain the raw material for star formation and conceal protostars behind layers of light-absorbing cosmic dust.
