A study has found that boiling tap water for 5 minutes can remove at least 90% of potentially harmful microplastics. The World Health Organization has limited research on their impact on human health. Researchers created samples of tap water containing common minerals and three common microplastic compounds, polystyrene, polyethylene, and polypropylene, and varied the "hardness" of the water samples by adjusting calcium carbonate concentrations. After boiling the samples, the researchers observed a significant reduction in microplastics. In harder water, nearly 90% of microplastics were removed due to the solidified calcium carbonate in the water becoming solid at higher temperatures. The effectiveness of point-of-use filters alone is unclear due to insufficient research, but one study suggested microfiltration filters could be used to remove stray particles.
