The root cause of any addiction is isolation. As a result of social distancing, WE are seeing all forms of addiction escalating at an alarming rate.

Multiple studies have demonstrated that technology can have the same effect on the brain as drug addiction. This occurs by their similar mechanism of increasing the release of the Pleasure/Reward neurotransmitter - Dopamine.

As it stands now, Social media and Video games are the 2 most addictive forms of technology. The creators PURPOSELY utilize psychology to manipulate our Youth (with developing brains) into getting hooked to their product.

It’s no wonder that over 50% of teens in the United States feel that they are addicted to their smartphones. Humans have an inherent NEED to connect with one another and meeting others virtually will not fulfill this NEED.

Research over the past decade shows a clear link between the rise of technology and the decline of mental health. Teens (especially females) who use social media and play video games regularly reported to feel more anxious and depressed as compared to their peers engaging in other recreational activities.

From my clinical experience in working with the addiction population, stopping an Addiction is not enough. That’s why most people relapse within the 1st 6months of completing a treatment program!

One Must figure out a way to replace the dopamine rush with another constructive behavior that can fill in the void (exercise, meditation, reading, cultivating new relationships, etc).

Even so... if our social distancing measures continue, our future will be inundated with depressed/anxious individuals looking to either self medicate or get a script to mask their feelings.

I have recently limited my time on all social media platforms for the purpose of being more present with the FamZ and ultimately Self Mental Preservation. I strongly encourage You to do the same 👊
