Popocatepetl shifts to Yellow Alert as Rincon de la Vieja erupts in Costa Rica

Costa Rica and Mexico drew focus in a day otherwise marked by steady activity across several arcs. Rincon de la Vieja produced its most energetic eruption of 2026, Popocatepetl emitted ash and gas, Ecuador’s Reventador and Sangay logged frequent explosions, and Alaska’s Great Sitkin kept slowly extruding lava while Kilauea stayed paused with vent glow. Compared with yesterday, Popocatepetl’s alert moved to Yellow Alert - Phase 2, and ash emissions at Kanlaon were not reported.

United States
great sitkin (great-sitkin/news.html) (Watch / Aviation ORANGE) continued slow lava effusion in the summit crater with rockfalls from the growing dome. At kilauea (kilauea/news.html) (Advisory / Aviation YELLOW), eruptive activity remained paused but glow and minor incandescence persisted at the north and south vents with occasional flames. shishaldin (shishaldin/news.html) (Advisory / Aviation YELLOW) showed vapor plumes, SO2 degassing, and thermal anomalies.

Indonesia
Eruptive activity persisted at ibu (ibu/news.html), dukono (dukono/news.html), semeru (semeru/news.html), and merapi (merapi/news.html), with numerous explosions and low plumes; Merapi also generated multiple hot rockfalls. Low-level activity was noted at lewotolok (lewotolo/news.html) (explosions and minor plumes) and lewotobi (lewotobi/news.html) (shallow emissions and volcanic seismicity). Unrest continued at several others, including karangetang (karangetang/news.html) (gas plumes, a tornillo event, and flames ~10 m above both craters), while kerinci (kerinci/news.html), krakatau (krakatau/news.html), and raung (raung/news.html) showed only gas emissions or routine unrest.

Philippines
mayon (mayon/news.html) remained elevated (Alert 3) with ongoing eruption signals, while kanlaon (canlaon/news.html) continued at Alert 2 but without specific ash reports today. Low-level unrest persisted at taal (taal/news.html) (Alert 1) and bulusan (bulusan/news.html) (Alert 1).

Mexico
popocatepetl (popocatepetl/news.html) shifted to Yellow Alert - Phase 2, producing ash-and-gas plumes and recording two small VT earthquakes (M2.1 and M1.1).

South America
In Ecuador, reventador (reventador/news.html) and sangay (sangay/news.html) registered dozens to over a hundred explosions with ash plumes to 0.9 km and 0.5 km, respectively; Reventador also shed incandescent rockfalls down the flanks. Peru’s sabancaya (sabancaya/news.html) sent ash-and-gas up to 1.2 km with a handful of volcano-tectonic quakes and recurring thermal anomalies.
