Rincon de la Vieja's strongest 2026 blast; Great Sitkin domes, Popocatepetl Yellow

A standout overnight blast at Costa Rica’s Rincon de la Vieja headlined a busy day of volcano activity. Great Sitkin’s lava dome kept growing with rockfalls, while Ecuador’s Reventador and Sangay produced scores of explosions and Mexico’s Popocatepetl emitted ash-and-gas. Notably, Popocatepetl’s formal alert listing shifted to Yellow Alert - Phase 2, and ash reports at Kanlaon were not repeated today.

United States
At Alaska’s great sitkin (great-sitkin/news.html) (Watch / Aviation ORANGE), lava continued to ooze within the summit crater and rockfalls were recorded. On Hawaii, kilauea (kilauea/news.html) stayed in a pause, with weak glow and occasional flames from both vents (Advisory / Aviation YELLOW). Farther west, shishaldin (shishaldin/news.html) showed vapor plumes with SO2 and thermal signals (Advisory / Aviation YELLOW).

Indonesia
Explosive activity was active at ibu (ibu/news.html) and semeru (semeru/news.html), with dozens of bursts and plumes rising 0.5–0.9 km. At merapi (merapi/news.html), hot rockfalls descended up to 1.8 km and near-summit gas rose about 100 m, while dukono (dukono/news.html) produced frequent explosions with modest gas plumes. lewotolok (lewotolo/news.html) registered multiple explosions and audible booms; several others including Lewotobi, Marapi, and Kerinci showed low-level gas-and-steam. Unrest at Level 2 persisted widely, with minor emissions or degassing at Krakatau, Lokon-Empung, Raung, Sangeang Api, Soputan, Sorikmarapi, and a small rockfall signal at Tambora.

Philippines
At mayon (mayon/news.html) (Alert Level 3), eruption activity remained in progress though not detailed today. kanlaon (canlaon/news.html) (Alert Level 2) continued activity without new ash reports, while taal (taal/news.html) (Alert Level 1) and bulusan (bulusan/news.html) (Alert Level 1) remained at low-level unrest.

Mexico
popocatepetl (popocatepetl/news.html) released ash-and-gas with two small VT quakes; the alert is now listed as Yellow Alert - Phase 2.

South America
In Ecuador, reventador (reventador/news.html) tallied 77 explosions with ash rising to 900 m and incandescent rockfalls down the flanks, while sangay (sangay/news.html) produced 143 explosions with ash to 500 m. Peru’s sabancaya (sabancaya/news.html) sent ash-and-gas up to 1.2 km, alongside a handful of internal quakes and repeated thermal anomalies.

Other
In Guatemala, fuego (fuego/news.html) and santa maria (santiaguito/news.html) generated frequent explosions and incandescent rockfalls. Costa Rica’s rincon de la vieja (rincon-de-la-vieja/news.html) produced an energetic eruption at 0052, the strongest of 2026, amid elevated tremor and LP/LF seismicity; nearby poas (poas/news.html) showed a crater lake warming to 77 C, brief harmonic tremor, and notable uplift, while turrialba (turrialba/news.html) stayed at Level 2 - Warning.
