Kilauea's 9-hour fountaining and ashfall stand out as PDCs hit Mayon

A burst of short-lived but vigorous activity at Hawaii’s Kilauea dominated today’s global picture, while hazardous flow collapses occurred at Mayon in the Philippines and a pyroclastic flow was noted at Semeru in Indonesia. Activity also ran high at Guatemala’s Fuego with ashfall in communities downwind, and Ecuador’s Reventador and Sangay logged frequent explosions. Compared to the previous day, Kilauea shifted from a pause to a brief eruptive episode before settling back.

United States
kilauea (kilauea/news.html) produced a 9-hour episode featuring dome fountaining to 150–200 m, an ash plume to about 4.8 km, widespread lava overflows on the caldera floor, and fist-sized clasts carried downwind; alert levels were temporarily raised to Watch/Aviation ORANGE and later lowered to Advisory/Yellow the same day. At great sitkin (great-sitkin/news.html) (Watch / Aviation ORANGE), lava continued to slowly erupt in the summit crater with rockfalls from the growing dome. shishaldin (shishaldin/news.html) (Advisory / Aviation YELLOW) showed vapor plumes with SO2 and thermal signals, while aniakchak (aniakchak/news.html) remained at Normal / Aviation GREEN as real-time monitoring was restored.

Indonesia
A pyroclastic density current descended Semeru during an explosive phase, while semeru (semeru/news.html) also produced numerous blasts with plumes to 900 m. Halmahera’s ibu (ibu/news.html) registered 129 explosions (plumes to 600 m) and dukono (dukono/news.html) had 15 explosions. On Java, merapi (merapi/news.html) generated hot rockfalls reaching 2 km; several others—including lewotolok (lewotolo/news.html), lewotobi (laki-laki) (lewotobi/news.html), marapi (marapi/news.html), kerinci (kerinci/news.html), and krakatau (krakatau/news.html)—showed low plumes or unrest amid broadly Level 2 - Alert conditions.

Philippines
mayon (mayon/news.html) sustained lava effusion; a flow-front collapse triggered pyroclastic density currents with runouts up to 3 km along the Mi-isi Gully, accompanied by minor Strombolian bursts. kanlaon (canlaon/news.html) produced seven ash-emission events with plumes to 800 m, alongside tremor and volcanic quakes. taal (taal/news.html) showed weak plumes, nine volcanic earthquakes, and modest SO2, while bulusan (bulusan/news.html) remained in low-level unrest with seismicity and inflation.

Mexico
popocatepetl (popocatepetl/news.html) emitted ash-and-gas under Yellow Alert - Phase 2.

South America
