A daily large thermal anomaly over the volcano was identified in satellite images. Ash plumes drifted 40 km SW and NE on 13 and 15 November, respectively.
Plumes of resuspended ash drifted 195 km SE on 20 November. Satellite images showed new lava lobes along the margins of the N flow near the distal end of the lava flow during 16-22 November. The Aviation Color Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-color scale).

Some additional information and material including the below video taken from the rim of the active crater reached us from our expedition group currently at Erta Ale volcano, about 15 km from Hayli Gubbi. During yesterday's survey of the area, they reported:
* Massive volcanic blocks, some estimated at 100 kgs, were thrown more than 50 meters from the crater.
* Medium to smaller projectiles scattered 50+ meters away.
* A thick carpet of ash and dust extends across a wide radius.
* The fresh ash is dark-brownish in color."
The lack of apparent fluidized lava bombs, the description above and the apparent short duration of Sunday's surprise eruption suggests it might have been a phreatic explosion, caused by overheated water in the underground flashing to steam, which in turn could have been caused by a rising magma body which itself has not yet arrived at the surface, but might do so in a near future.
