I didn’t want to post here until I felt like I’d really turned a corner. No one wants to read bad news and I don’t want to deliver it. But today was a big one for me. A little context: after my near-death scare, the fluid in my lung cavity (and general retention) ballooned me up to 256lbs and I could barely breathe. So, when I left the hospital I set two goals. 1. To get lighter than my pre-surgery weight. 2. To be able to walk ONE mile without stopping. Now it may not seem like much, because it isn’t. But today, I hit both marks. And for me, it’s a big victory on the road to recovery. In my experience there are (in general) two types of people in this world. 1) People who believe that everything is beyond their control and that they’re a victim of circumstance. 2) People who think they can control everything. Group 1 tend to become lifelong victims. Group 2 tend to feel like abysmal failures when life nut-punches them. Both types of thinking are wrong. There ARE circumstances beyond your control. It’s called life. But the constant, slow plod forward is what eventually beats it into submission. Sometimes it’s humbling (strike that, humiliating) when you have to recalibrate and change your goals. Like say, aiming for a 1300lbs total… scaled back to walking ONE mile without dying. As long as you’re moving forward, as long as you’re doing SOMEthing… you’re not a quitter. So, keep on with the baby steps. Baby steps through the office… baby steps out the door… #NameThatMovieLine #LwCSeptember
