B2B automation: HubSpot vs Marketo vs Customer.io

Five reads on picking a marketing automation platform you won't resent in year two.

1️⃣ HubSpot vs Marketo on ceiling — HubSpot's all-in-one wins for speed; Marketo's flexibility wins once your ops team is mature. Source: MarTech.org.
2️⃣ Customer.io for product-led B2B — event-triggered beats list-based when usage data drives your motion. Via Customer.io blog.
3️⃣ The CRM gravity well — your MAP choice is half-decided by whether you live in Salesforce or HubSpot CRM. Source: Reforge.
4️⃣ Migration cost is the hidden number — re-architecting workflows and scoring is the bill nobody quotes you. Via MarketingProfs.
5️⃣ When you need none of them — early-stage teams over-buy automation before they have a funnel to automate.

Essential before a multi-year MAP commitment.

Data quality: observability vs testing

Four reads on catching bad data before a dashboard lies to the board.

1️⃣ dbt tests vs Great Expectations — dbt tests catch what you anticipated; GE is heavier but expresses richer constraints. Source: Locally Optimistic.
2️⃣ Monte Carlo and the anomaly angle — observability watches freshness and volume for problems you didn't think to test. Via Monte Carlo blog.
3️⃣ Contracts over alerts — the shift to declaring schema expectations upstream so breakage fails loudly at the source. Source: dbt Labs blog.
4️⃣ Testing is cheap; observability is insurance — when each is worth the spend, by team size. Via Modern Data Stack newsletter.

Skip if your pipelines are five models deep. Essential if a silent null once cost you a campaign.

Google выпустил Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash

Metrics: semantic layer vs SaaS-defined KPIs

Four reads on where your numbers should be defined.

1️⃣ The semantic layer pitch — define revenue once and let every tool read it, instead of redefining it in five dashboards. Source: dbt Labs blog.
2️⃣ Cube vs dbt Semantic Layer — Cube ships an API and caching for apps; dbt's keeps definitions next to your models. Via Cube blog.
3️⃣ When metrics drift — the failure mode where Amplitude, your BI tool, and finance each report a different MRR. Source: Locally Optimistic.
4️⃣ Headless BI vs another dashboard — the case for a metrics API over buying yet another visualization seat. Via Modern Data Stack newsletter.

Skip if one team owns all reporting. Essential if 'what's our active user count' has three answers.

Build vs buy: the stack decisions that haunt you

Five reads on the tradeoff every martech lead gets wrong at least once.

1️⃣ Buy the commodity, build the differentiator — the framework for what deserves engineering time and what should be a checkout. Source: Reforge.
2️⃣ The total cost of a 'free' open-source tool — self-hosting trades license fees for on-call rotations. Via Modern Data Stack newsletter.
3️⃣ Switching costs you priced at zero — re-training, re-integration, and historical-data migration are the real lock-in. Source: CDP Institute.
4️⃣ When consolidation hurts — the all-in-one suite that wins on demos and loses on every individual feature. Via MarTech.org.
5️⃣ Reversible vs one-way-door choices — spend your diligence on the decisions you can't easily undo.

Essential before your next vendor evaluation.

Build a UTM governance system that survives 5 teams
The checklist that stops campaign data from rotting in your warehouse.

1 — Lock a taxonomy doc first. Define allowed values for source/medium/campaign before anyone tags a single link; free-text fields are where attribution goes to die.
Why: one team writing 'fb' and another 'facebook' splits the same channel into two rows forever.
Source: terminusapp.com/blog/utm-builder thinking on enforced dropdowns.

2 — Force lowercase, no spaces, hyphen-only at the link-builder layer.
Why: 'Spring_Sale' and 'spring-sale' are different campaigns to every analytics tool on earth.

3 — Add a campaign ID column that maps to your ad platform spend.
Why: it's the only join key that reconciles clicks against actual dollars.

4 — Audit weekly with a SQL query for medium values outside your allowlist.
Why: drift is inevitable; catching it at 12 rows beats catching it at 12,000.

That's the stack for this week. Forward to a teammate.
