The advice says whoever crawls more pages wins. I tested Ahrefs vs Semrush on three real domains I own, and index size barely changed my decisions.

What actually mattered was freshness and how each scores authority.

Ahrefs for index recency:
➕ New links showed up in 2-4 days in its Best by links report
➖ DR is a single black-box number, easy to game

Semrush for context:
➕ Authority Score blends traffic + toxicity, harder to fake
➖ Its fresh links lagged ~7-10 days on my smaller domain

Best for: link prospecting where recency matters, go Ahrefs. Auditing your own profile for risk, Semrush.

Price-vs-value: both start ~$129/mo. Index-size bragging is marketing. Buy on freshness and how the authority metric resists manipulation, not on the headline 'trillions of pages' claim.

Myth: "Free keyword tools give the same volume, just buy later"

People say Keyword Surfer or Google's free volume is close enough to start. I ran 40 keywords through Google Keyword Planner (free) vs Ahrefs and Semrush on a real account.

Keyword Planner:
➕ Free, pulls straight from Google
➖ Buckets volume into ranges (1K-10K), useless for prioritizing
➖ Inflates with close variants lumped together

Ahrefs/Semrush:
➕ Discrete numbers + clickstream-corrected
➖ Paid, and they disagree with each other by 30-50%

Best for: validating a niche exists, free is fine. Picking which of two close terms to target, free will mislead you, those ranges hide the real winner.

Price-vs-value: the myth costs you targeting wrong terms. The bucket problem is the actual trap, not the missing precision.

Pick free if you're idea-stage. Skip it the moment two keywords look 'equal', that's exactly where ranges fail you.

Myth: "Target keywords under KD 30 and you'll rank"

Every course repeats it. I tested KD on 60 keywords across Ahrefs, Semrush and Mangools on a real site.

The problem: each tool computes Keyword Difficulty differently, mostly from referring domains of the top 10. None of them read intent or content depth.

Ahrefs KD:
➕ Honest, based purely on backlinks to rank in top 10
➖ Says nothing about whether you can match the content

Semrush KD:
➕ Folds in more signals
➖ Often 20+ points higher for the same term, scares you off winnable ones

Best for: a rough sort, fine. A go/no-go decision, never.

Real correction: a 'KD 15' term with three Reddit threads ranking is a layup; a 'KD 15' with all brand sites is impossible. The number can't see that.

Price-vs-value: don't pay extra for a 'more accurate' KD, they're all proxies.

Pick KD as a coarse filter. Skip it as your buy signal, eyeball the actual SERP.

Myth: "You need daily rank tracking or you're flying blind"

Tools upsell daily refreshes hard. I ran AccuRanker (daily) next to a weekly schedule on the same 200 keywords for two months.

Daily tracking:
➕ Catches algo-update volatility fast
➖ You react to noise, positions bounce 2-3 spots daily on autopilot
➖ Costs 3-5x more per keyword

Weekly tracking:
➕ Smooths the jitter, trends are clearer
➖ Misses the exact day of a drop

Best for: live SEO during a known update or launch, daily. Steady content sites, weekly is genuinely better, less false alarm.

Price-vs-value: AccuRanker daily ran me ~$116/mo for that volume; weekly on a cheaper tool covered it for a third. The daily 'always-on' pitch is where the margin lives, not where your value is.

Pick daily if you're actively firefighting. Skip it for evergreen sites, you'll just chase noise.
