Checklist: set up a rank tracker so the data isn't lying to you
I tested fresh projects in AccuRanker and Semrush Position Tracking on a real client. Most 'rank dropped!' panics come from a bad setup, not Google.

The setup checklist:
— Lock location to city, not country, if you target local. Country-level hides real volatility.
— Set device to the split that matches your traffic (check GSC first), don't track desktop-only out of habit.
— Tag keywords by intent/funnel stage at import. Untagged trackers are useless at month 3.
— Set refresh to daily only for your money terms; weekly for the long tail to save credits.
— Add the exact-match domain AND www/non-www canonical so you don't track the wrong URL.

AccuRanker:

➖ Pricey per keyword
Semrush:
➕ Tagging + filtering is more flexible
➖ Daily refresh isn't truly daily on cheaper tiers

Pick this if you report rankings to a client. Skip if GSC is enough for you.

Playbook: audit backlinks and build a disavow file without nuking good links
I ran a full toxic-link pass on a real penalized-ish site in Ahrefs and Semrush. The order matters or you'll disavow links you wanted.

The 6 steps:
— Export all referring domains, not URLs. You disavow at domain level 95% of the time.
— Sort by DR/AS ascending and eye the bottom 20% first — that's where the garbage lives.
— Flag patterns, not single links: exact-match anchor spam, foreign-language link farms, repeated footer sitewides.
— Cross-check anything 'toxic' against GSC links. If it sends real clicks, keep it.
— Build the file as domain: entries only, one per line, UTF-8, no headers.
— Wait — only submit if you have a manual action or clear negative SEO. Otherwise don't.

Ahrefs:
➕ Cleanest referring-domain export and anchor breakdown
➖ No native 'toxicity score' (honestly a plus)
Semrush:
➕ Built-in toxicity score + one-click disavow export
➖ The score over-flags; trust it blindly and you'll hurt yourself

Best for: manual judgment → Ahrefs. Guided workflow → Semrush.
Pick this if you have a penalty. Skip the disavow entirely if you don't — most sites shouldn't.

Playbook: a content prune audit that decides keep / merge / kill
I ran this on a real 400-page blog using Screaming Frog + GSC + Ahrefs together. One tool alone gives you half the picture.

The decision flow:
— Crawl with Screaming Frog, connect the GSC and Analytics APIs so every URL gets clicks + impressions inline.
— Pull last-12-months clicks. Zero clicks AND zero impressions for 12 months = kill candidate.
— Impressions but no clicks = title/intent problem, not a kill. Tag 'refresh'.
— Two URLs ranking for the same query (cannibalization) = merge into the stronger one, 301 the loser.
— Check Ahrefs for referring domains before deleting — a dead page with 5 links gets redirected, not 404'd.

Screaming Frog:
➕ The GSC+GA join in one crawl is the whole trick
➖ Desktop app, eats RAM on big sites
Ahrefs / GSC:
➕ Free link + query layer Frog can't give you
➖ Manual cross-referencing

Best for: the join lives in Screaming Frog; nothing else does it as cheaply.
Price-vs-value: Frog's flat annual fee beats per-credit crawlers for this job.
Pick this if your blog is bloated. Skip if you're under 50 pages.

I did a full research pass for a new site using only free tools, then sanity-checked it against paid. It holds up surprisingly well.

The free stack, in order:
— Seed with Google autosuggest + 'People Also Ask' for raw intent language.
— Run seeds through Keyword Surfer or the free Ahrefs Keyword Generator for rough volume.
— Use Google Trends to kill anything seasonal-dying before you commit.
— Validate real demand in GSC: if you already rank page 2 for it, that's your fastest win.
— Cluster by hand in a sheet — group terms that share the top 3 SERP results = one article.

➕ Volume right in the SERP, zero setup
➖ Estimates are rough, US-skewed
Ahrefs Free Generator:
➕ Surprisingly deep seed expansion
➖ Limited rows, no export

Best for: idea volume → Keyword Surfer. Seed expansion → Ahrefs free.
Price-vs-value: this gets you 70% of paid for $0. The missing 30% is accurate difficulty.
Pick this if you're pre-revenue. Skip the free route once you're choosing between 500 keywords a month.
