The old-school metric vs the modern index. I cross-checked 25 donor sites.

Majestic
➕ Trust Flow / Citation Flow ratio is a fast junk detector — low TF, high CF = farm
➕ Topical Trust Flow shows link relevance by category
➖ UI feels dated; the historic index pads numbers with dead links

Ahrefs
➕ Fresher live index + organic traffic estimate beside every domain
➕ DR + traffic together exposes fake authority Majestic's CF alone misses
➖ No direct equivalent to Topical Trust Flow's relevance breakdown

Best for: spotting link farms by ratio → Majestic. Judging real ranking strength → Ahrefs.

Price-vs-value: I still open Majestic for the TF/CF ratio as a 5-second farm check, then confirm in Ahrefs. Two cheap signals beat one.

Pick Majestic for the ratio gut-check. Skip relying on its totals — the historic index inflates them.

IndexNow vs sitemap submission for getting crawled:
Tactic head-to-head. I pushed 50 new URLs each way and watched the logs.

IndexNow (Bing/Yandex)
➕ Near-instant pickup — Bingbot hit my URLs within minutes
➕ Push model: you tell them, no waiting to be discovered
➖ Google doesn't use it; zero help for your biggest channel

XML sitemap + GSC
➕ The canonical path for Google; pairs with URL Inspection
➕ Communicates priority + lastmod across the whole site
➖ Pull model — discovery, not instant; Google crawls on its schedule

Best for: fast indexing on Bing/Yandex → IndexNow. Google coverage at scale → sitemap.

Price-vs-value: both free. Do BOTH — IndexNow costs nothing and wins on Bing while your sitemap handles Google. There's no tradeoff except setup time.

Pick IndexNow if you ignore Bing traffic. Skip treating it as a Google hack — it does nothing there.

Semrush vs Similarweb for competitor traffic:
I checked the same 10 competitor domains against sites where I knew the real numbers.

Semrush
➕ Organic traffic estimate ties directly to keyword + position data
➕ Best when most of the competitor's traffic is search
➖ Blind to direct/social/referral — under-counts brand-heavy sites

Similarweb
➕ Full traffic mix (direct, social, referral, paid), not just organic
➕ Closer on big brand sites where direct dominates
➖ Noisy on small sites; my known-truth site was 2x off under 50k visits

Best for: organic-share analysis → Semrush. Total-traffic + channel mix → Similarweb.

Price-vs-value: Semrush was within ~20% on search-driven competitors; Similarweb won on brand-heavy ones but flailed on small sites. Match the tool to the competitor's traffic shape.

Pick Semrush for search-led niches. Skip Similarweb for sub-50k-visit competitors — the noise is real.

Crawl-stats report vs raw server logs for crawl budget:

GSC Crawl Stats
➕ Free, zero setup, shows host status + crawl-by-response-type
➕ Good first signal that something's wrong (spikes, 5xx, slow response)
➖ Aggregated + sampled; can't tell you WHICH parameter URLs got hammered

Raw server log analysis
➕ Every Googlebot hit, exact URL — I found 60% of budget going to faceted filter URLs
➕ Verifiable (reverse-DNS the bot), no sampling
➖ Needs log access + a parser (Screaming Frog Log Analyser, etc.); real setup

Best for: a quick health pulse → Crawl Stats. Finding the exact budget leak → logs.

Price-vs-value: Crawl Stats told me budget was wasted; only logs told me WHERE. You need both, but logs end the investigation.

Pick Crawl Stats to notice the problem. Skip it as the diagnosis — logs name the culprit URLs.

I ran both on identical posts on a test install.

➕ Multiple focus keywords + richer schema generator on the free tier
➕ Built-in 404 monitor + redirects without a second plugin
➖ More settings = more rope to hang yourself; defaults can over-mark schema

Yoast
➕ Conservative, stable, hard to misconfigure into a mess
➕ Readability analysis is genuinely useful for non-writers
➖ Schema + redirects locked behind premium; one focus keyword free

Best for: power users who want features free → Rank Math. Set-and-forget stability → Yoast.

Price-vs-value: Rank Math gives away what Yoast charges for (redirects, schema, multi-keyword). For a budget build, that's the call. For a low-maintenance client site, Yoast's guardrails are worth more.

Pick Rank Math if you'll actually use the extras. Skip its schema auto-output if you can't audit it.
