I looked up the DNI recently and, according to Wikipedia, the DNI was “created during the Reagan Administration”

That’s news to me since (former Atty General) Ed Meese and I created the DNI as a result of the 9/11 failure by the DCI (Director of Central Intelligence);
GHW Bush had served as DCI before he served as VP (Bush also coordinated the assassination attempt on Reagan and engineered the 9/11 demolition.

Notably, Wikipedia also claimed the Defense Clandestine Service was not created until 2012.

Oddly, I recall creating it, with the coordination of General John Vessey (CJCS), Senators Helms and Goldwater, and Assistant SecDef for Intelligence (Frank Aurelio) in 1984.
SES John Kiehm was appointed the DCS Director and I remained the Director of Operations.
