Starship | SN11 | High-Altitude Flight Test

Ended in a RUD.
Remember, it's a test program and they've gained a lot of wins from the four flights. Stable controlled descent is one, but long-duration Raptor performance deserves a shoutout.

🚀 SN11 Flight Roundup
🕙 Last Updated: 14:19 UTC 30/03
Media:
- Video of debris falling
- Photo of SN11 at apogee
- Frame from falling debris showing what looks like a landing leg
ℹ️ SN11 had a nominal ascent, maneuvering and descent before lighting one Raptor for landing but exploded possibly in air. Visibility is poor so we can't tell what happened or where. SpaceX has detailed telemetry so the test result is concerning but a lot of valuable data has been collected as usual.
(Stay tuned for more...)
⚠️ The poor visibility did not cause the issue. Fog does not cause engine failure or any issues. It may mean it takes them longer to figure out what happened but it did not affect the vehicle.
📰 News:
Eric Berger on Twitter:
- "From some photos, it looks like the belly flop maneuver may not have gone entirely as planned during SN11's flight. The vehicle broke appears to have broken apart well above the ground.
Data is good, but this is not a great day." Source
- "Trevor said the vehicle was rotating about its axis more than during previous flights (he has been in South Texas for all of them). This suggests there was an issue with the belly flop maneuver, but of course none of this is confirmed." Source
Elon Musk on Twitter:
- "A high production rate solves many ills" Source
- "At least the crater is in the right place!" Source
⚠️ "Looks like engine 2 had issues on ascent & didn’t reach operating chamber pressure during landing burn, but, in theory, it wasn’t needed.
Something significant happened shortly after landing burn start. Should know what it was once we can examine the bits later today." Source
- "SN15 rolls to launch pad in a few days. It has hundreds of design improvements across structures, avionics/software & engine.
Hopefully, one of those improvements covers this problem. If not, then retrofit will add a few more days." Source
- "Next major technology rev is at SN20. Those ships will be orbit-capable with heat shield & stage separation system. Ascent success probability is high.
However, SN20+ vehicles will probably need many flight attempts to survive Mach 25 entry heating & land intact." Source
