DENSE SOLAR WIND SPARKS GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A dense wave of solar wind gently crashed against Earth's magnetic field on Aug. 2nd, sparking a G1-class geomagnetic storm.

It may have been a ripple from a passing CME--one of several "near miss CMEs" that left the sun in late July. Twilight auroras mixed with noctilucent clouds were seen in Norway.

PERSEID METEOR ALERT: Earth is enteriing a stream of debris from Comet 109/P Swift-Tuttle, source of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Forecasters expect the shower to peak on the night of Aug. 11-12, with Aug. 12-13 a possible close second. On both dates, meteor rates could exeed 100/hr during the dark hours before sunrise.

FARSIDE EXPLOSION: Yesterday, Aug. 15th (0508 UT), a gigantic filament of magnetism erupted from the farside of the sun: movie. SOHO saw a CME fly away from the blast site, but it will not hit Earth. The explosion is interesting because it signals the presence of an active region on the farside of the sun, which could turn to face us later this week.
