the main job a dog needs to do to learn not to eat food that's in front of them is to learn to identify when they're being asked not to eat it

after leaving it, the dog gets rewarded with a treat that's appropriate for them

so if you have any food at all that you CAN safely eat, it might be a really good idea to have a bit every time you resist an impulse to eat unsafe food

after the training's been repeated enough times, the treat becomes unnecessary, and if you don't have a treat, praise could work too

another thing that helps is teaching the dog to associate food only with a specific location, so if they're not in the eating place, they understand that it's not time to eat. Obviously, if the unsafe food is in your kitchen, you can't designate the whole kitchen "not the eating place", but maybe specific cupboards or shelves in the fridge could be for unsafe foods, and then your brain just has to remember "avoid taking food from those places"
