Internal documents reviewed by Reuters reveal Meta raked in more than $3 billion in ad revenue in 2024 from Chinese companies pushing scams, illegal gambling, pornography, and other banned content to foreign consumers, even as China bans Meta platforms at home. China ultimately accounted for over $18 billion in Meta’s annual ad sales, more than a tenth of its global revenue, with Meta estimating the country was the source of roughly a quarter of all scam and banned-product ads worldwide. After internal warnings about growing harm, Meta launched an anti-fraud push in mid-2024 that cut the share of problematic ads from China nearly in half by year’s end.
