Elektrische U-Boote

In seinem Roman „Zwanzigtausend Meilen unter dem Meer“ stellte uns Jules Verne ein Elektro-U-Boot vor, das er Nautilus nannte. Es verfügte über einen ordentlich eingerichteten Speisesaal und möglichen weiteren Luxus.

Es war ein bisschen wie andere U-Boote, wie das Drei-Personen-U-Boot Alvin, das mit Blei-Säure-Batterien angetrieben wurde. Auch das U-Boot im Roman war voll angetrieben. Der Protagonist erzählt uns die Details des U-Bootes als „ein mächtiges, gehorsames, schnelles, leichtes, für jeden Einsatz geeignetes und an Bord meines Schiffes herrschendes Mittel“.

Im Auftrag seines nautischen Protagonisten konzipierte Verne ein im Wesentlichen „vollelektrisches“ Schiff, und dies zu einer Zeit, als die ersten praktischen Anwendungen der Elektrizität erst wenige Jahrzehnte und ein Jahrhundert vor dem Bau solcher Schiffe möglich waren.
