1. In the labor movement you'll often hear the phrase "Build worker power". What do we mean by that? Power is just the ability to accomplish a goal. To successfully exercise power, you must have the MEANS to do so.

For example, the police are granted power to enforce laws. The ultimate means the police employ to exercise their power is physical violence or the THREAT of it.
That last part is very important.

2. Any structure of power depends on the execution of their power to be a recognized and credible possibility. Power without credible means to exercise it, is an illusion.

Many workers feel powerless on the job with little to no say in how, when, or why they work.

Your boss doesn't want you to know that you and your fellow workers have incredible power, as well as the means to EXERCISE it.

3. Your combined labor created all value. That means the bosses' profits are in your hands. Even small actions like work slowages or sickouts can have dramatic impact on the bottom line.

The greatest power on the job manifests when you and your fellow workers are organized enough to Shut It Down. That's why we say:

"United we bargain, divided we beg"

4. Power like that takes structure to exercise successfully. Building structure takes organizing. The competing power structure has the money, the media, and the law on its side which makes organizing more difficult.

However difficult it may be, history teaches us that none of the rights or protections we enjoy today were won without a fight.
